Minutes from the February 2005 Leadership Team Meeting

Minutes from February Leadership Team Meeting held on February 3, 2005

Members Present:  Cheryl Breidenbach, George Carr, Dean Cheatham, Joyce Noland, Rich Peterson, Jay Wilson, Sally Serago, Christy Pritchard, Heidi Abele, Linda Blake, Marian Garcia, Mo Garcia, Brian Eberhard and Lori King.

I.  Feedback from Player Reps:

Lori King:  People are complaining about ads on Sign Up Genius.  Since we have extra funds, she is wondering if we would want to upgrade our subscription to the point where the ads are nonexistent.  Joyce will check into it.  She is thinking it might be $10/m and if that is the case all members thought we should upgrade.

Note:  The cost to upgrade SUG is $22.98 per month ($275 annually).  Unfortunately the upgrade only allows ten add-free logins per day which really doesn't solve the problem.   When using a phone to make a court reservation, if an ad is blocking the “Submit and sign up” button located at the bottom of their screen players  should close the ad by clicking on the “x” in the top right corner.

Linda Blake:  Haven’t had any clinics or practices recently.  Next practice is Feb. 19.

Nets are being left up and courts not being cancelled.  It was reiterated again that there really isn’t anything we can do about these situations other than others taking nets down when necessary.  A note will be posted in the website asking players to please delete their court reservations if they are not going to be used.

Rich Peterson:  Players are asking about Gym 1 not being used when Gym 2 is full of players waiting for a court.  Mo stated it is reserved for basketball.  He stated that we can perhaps get in on a ad hoc basis.  We can ask front desk if we can set a net up over in Gym 1, or if Mo is available, he can go to Allison to see if we can use a court.

Sally Serago:  People are slipping on court 1 outside due to sand.  George asked if we could padlock that court.  We also need to get a new brush out there with a sign requesting players to clean shoes prior to entering the courts.   Mo will do this.  George can also provide one.  Mo stated that courts will be resurfaced in 2025. The sidewalk next to Two Notch will be finished as well.

Christy:  People want to know if there is a ball basket containing balls for Open Play.  Mo stated that there is behind the front desk.  You just have to ask for a ball when you enter as you sign in.

2.  Benches:  We will use some of our surplus money for benches.  We don’t need backs for the benches.    One will be dedicated to Rita Turner, who passed away on January 31.  Mo stated that a memorial service will be held for Rita some time in February.  This will be pot luck event for all.

George/Mo will get the dedication plaque. Local cost is  $1780 for four benches. Mo should be able to get them significantly cheaper.  Five weeks for delivery.

3.  Dividers:  Joyce.  The Mesh is what will be replaced.  Brian/Mo will line up sewing volunteers.  The city is buying one net and mesh for 40 dividers.

4.  Palmetto:  Currently the events will be held as follows but could be changed due to numbers of participants in given events:  Thursday 60+,70+ Men’s/Women’s; Friday 60+,70+ Mixed; Saturday 11+, 50+ Men’s/Women’s; Sunday 11+,50+ Mixed.   Overflow could be held at GP on Saturday, if needed.  Registration will be open April 1.  Mo asked if we could offer singles.  That will be looked into.

5.  DUPR Ratings:  Harve has stated in the past we have used USAPA Ratings for the Palmetto.  The DUPR ratings are generally higher.  For the Palmetto we will use DUPR, API rating, UTRP or USAPA.

Mo suggested that it maybe  time to revamp court designation with all the new players and ratings.  This will be looked into at future date.

6.  April - National Pickleball Month Events:   We are all in favor of Groovy Tuesdays 4-6pm like we had last year.  Mo suggested perhaps doing it outdoors on Sundays.  The decision of when/where the April weekly events will occur will be made during next month’s meeting.

7.  Court time at GP:  We will only get three courts Wednesday nights and only one session Saturday mornings.  Christy commented that she thought Wednesday nights were be used.  Joyce/Brian will talk to Dalyn and see if API can be given any time slots back.  It was suggested that perhaps GP will allow us to use additional times on an as needed basis for clinics/lessons.

8.  Player Rating Session-George.  This will be turned over to Harve. Eight players were rated on Wednesday January 22 at Smith-Hazel.  There are currently five players signed up to be rated on a  Saturday.  Saturday  court time is expected back at Odell in March when basketball season ends.

9.  New Players’ Clinic:  George.  To be held at Smith Hazel on Wednesday February 12.

10.  Rules Quiz: George.  He suggested that all 3.0 players take the AP quiz and that League players take USAPA quiz.  Linda stated the new players should take the quiz after participating in the beginner’s clinic.

11.  Financial Update:  Dean.  The bank account shows approximately a $19,000 balance.  Dean provided a yearly detailed 2024 Income/Expense Statement which members appreciated.  Mo will provide Dean with the League monetary numbers and the actual surplus.

12.  League- Jordyn and Mo:  $20/person.  Beginning March 1. A slight per person fee will be paid to the city in lieu of paying  rent for court reservations.

13.  Closing Comments:  Marian asked who we are going to donate surplus money to.  Marian will check into donating to Hospice.  All agreed $2000 to this organization would be worthy.

Marian suggested moving meeting time to later in the evening.    Everyone is OK with the current 2:30 meeting time.

Next meeting will be March 3, 2:30.
